If Merlot is what sparks your fancy, Northstar Winery should be on your list of destinations. Owned by Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, Northstar was created with the sole purpose of making world-class Merlot. Beginning with the inaugural vintage in 1994, it has continued to produce critically acclaimed Walla Walla Merlot and Columbia Valley Merlot.

With a postcard-perfect location amid the rolling acreage of its estate vineyard, Northstar is unique in that it produces Merlots that are similar to the great Merlot-based wines of Bordeaux, France, while maintaining a style and character that is undeniably Washington State.

A Sixth Sense About Grape Selection

In 2002, Northstar joined the prestigious Walla Walla wine community when it completed its state-of-the-art winery just south of the city. Heralded as one of Washington's leaders in producing high quality Merlot, Northstar consistently earns high marks and praise from critics, restaurateurs, and wine lovers across the country, including Mardi and I.

Using grapes from the estate as well as choice spots in the Columbia Valley, Northstar's own winemaker David "Merf" Merfeld is "committed to producing the best Merlot Washington state has to offer." Joining the winemaking team in 2001, Merfeld quickly moved up the ladder to become assistant winemaker, where he apprenticed under legendary California winemaker Jed Steele. Of Merfeld, Steele has to say, "Merf has what all great winemakers must have: a sixth sense about grape selection, and exacting standards when blending the best of the best from the vineyards."

Northstar takes great pride in their commitment to making Merlot in Walla Walla, which is increasingly recognized as one of the most special places on earth to grow and produce this varietal. In addition to Merlot, Northstar also produces limited quantities of other Bordeaux varietals, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Syrah. In the Bordeaux tradition, Northstar also produce a Semillon as their “house white wine” to share with friends and visitors to the winery.

Winemaker Dinners, Art and Music

From their tasting room and relaxing patio, visitors can take in panoramic views of the Blue Mountains and equally wonderful views of the estate vineyards and rolling hills of Walla Walla. But what Mardi and I especially enjoy about Northstar is that it goes beyond wine tasting.

With a nod to the larger experience of enjoying a fine glass of wine, Northstar hosts ongoing winemaker dinners as well as wine club events. In addition, you'll find rotating art exhibits by local artists and periodic musical events featuring local musicians. It's truly a complete experience that leaves every wine lover exceptionally satisfied.

Public and Private Tastings

Northstar is open for public tastings and tours seven days a week. Private tastings are also available by appointment. Guests will enjoy world-class Washington Merlot and learn more about why Merlot is the best-selling red wine variety in America.

Visitors can take a piece of Northstar home with them by stopping in at their well-stocked gift shop. In addition to Northstar wines and Northstar logo ware, there is also a selection of other wine-related gifts.
