Designed as a mansion for the wealthy, this impressive home has changed with the times and appears to relish its new role as an inn where hospitality is provided to travelers from around the world.

An historic mansion modeled after an Italian estate, The Villa is an elegant and welcoming bed and breakfast set in the Stadium District of Tacoma. With views of the Olympics and Puget Sound, it offers a standout location for exploring the city, as well as warm service and comfort worthy of Italian royalty.

Special History

Built in 1925 for the McCormack family, the Villa was designed by A.J. Russell, who also designed the Washington State governor's mansion. This Italian Renaissance style mansion served as a single-family residence until 1994, when it was converted into a bed and breakfast.

For 12 years Aaron and Kristy lived a few blocks away from The Villa until they purchased it in 2005. Kristy has lived in Tacoma since 1972 and enjoys helping guests get to know the city. She especially loves to cook, while husband Aaron is an avid gardener. A native of eastern Oregon, he has lived in Tacoma for the last eighteen years.

Stroll Through History

Appearing on the National Register of Historic Bed and Breakfasts, The Villa sits on a half-acre lot with extensive gardens and lush flowers that bloom all summer long. The mansion uses warm colors throughout to bring a convivial atmosphere, while antiques complement the classic architecture.

Antique collectors will take note of the 650-year-old mother of pearl inlay Asian chest in the entry area and the 1920 grand piano in living room. Also found in The Villa is a Waterford window that was wrapped in brown paper and brought from Ireland by steamship by Mr. McCormack. The living room is decorated with art glass-fitting for an accommodation located within miles of the Museum of Glass-and a garden room with arched windows.

Italian Style

The Villa's five rooms are decorated with an eclectic mix of antiques and hand-made furniture from the prior owner. One of my favorite rooms is the large, three-room suite "Cimbrone," which has a veranda overlooking a sunken garden and peek-a-boo water and mountain views. In the sitting room, guests may absorb the warmth of the marble-tiled gas fireplace from a love seat that can be also made into a single bed if needed. The oversize tiled shower makes for a refreshing morning-and for evening, the antique soaking tub is big enough for two.

The large king bedroom "Sorrento" has a fireplace and private deck with views of the Olympic Mountains and Puget Sound. All other rooms have queen beds and private baths. The "Amalfi" has a one-person Jacuzzi tub, while the "Caserta" offers a two-person Jacuzzi tub, gas fireplace and the warm sounds of a fountain burbling outside.

The Taste of Tradition

The light-filled dining room where breakfast is served features a hand-made table with seating for fourteen. Breakfast begins with fresh fruit and a scone, and follows with wonderful foods such as eggs Benedict, frittatas, omelets, pancakes and sausage with scrambled eggs. The menu often includes seasonal herbs and other fresh ingredients, and Kristy points out that many guests feel so comfortable that they come to breakfast in their robes. Such is the friendly atmosphere found in the midst of the elegance of The Villa.

When we stayed at the Villa, we learned that Kristy was quietly giving Iraq bound soldiers and spouses a significant discount so that they could have a quality experience together before shipping out. I was so impressed with their quiet way of honoring our service people.
